Warning: Educated Woman

It used to be that only men went to college, but now that has changed. According to an article by Education Reporter, 57% of college students in America today are female, 43% male, compared to the 3 to 4 ratio of women to men forty years ago.

The writer of this article is a man named Bill Costello, and what caught my attention was the way he describes female students.  He explains that "many men are dropping out of college because they can't keep up with the diligent, accomplished women they're competing against".  The fact that he described women as "diligent" and "accomplished" was interesting to me because Costello could have just said "women" or used a different adjective.  Instead, he chooses to point out the fact that men are dropping out of college because the women they're competing against are ahead of them effort and ability.

It seems just a short time ago that women were considered only able to do more "feminine" tasks, like raising children and doing the cooking and cleaning for a household.  I find it very exciting that we as Americans are experiencing such a shift in our ideas about a woman's place in society, as Costello, a male writer, shows.

  1. I find it very interesting that women dominate colleges, yet less women work. According to a United States department of Labor website, less than 47 percent of the workforce is female (http://www.dol.gov/wb/stats/main.htm). On the same website I found the two most common jobs for women were nurses, and secretaries/ administrative assistants. This shows that there still may be sexism, because women are less likely to work, even though more have a college education, or have second in command jobs to men, even though they may have better educations
