Many of the television shows we watch involve a token character: an African-American doctor, a teacher who is in a wheelchair, an Asian mayor. In the show Psych, Shawn, main character, is white and Gus, his sidekick, is black. However, Psych doesn't follow all the stereotypes. Shawn may be the main character, but he certainly isn't always the leader. He is disorganized, unrealistic, and rarely serious. Gus, on the other hand, has a steady job as a pharmacist, is always well-dressed, and is much more practical.
It's striking to see a main character that's black, but it's becoming less uncommon. I think it's become less common to see black characters who are unintelligent or who follow the stereotypes that Huck expects of Jim in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. What other instances are there of black men who aren't stereotypical characters?
