Remembering the Individuals

Nine years ago today, nearly 3,000 lives were lost because of four hijacked jets that crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania.  Today we remember that moment in our nation's history.  Those of us, like me, who were not directly affected by the event remember hearing about the Twin Towers and being amazed and horrified, but to us it's only a story.

To the individuals who were affected, it's not just a story, it's their story.  Three different individuals are quoted in a CNN article about remembering the tragedy today at Ground Zero with the thousands of others there.  Each of them remembers a family member who was lost then, like a woman remembering her mother, though she was only 11 years old when her mother passed.  Each of us has our own story and history, none of them the same, but somehow we all have the ability to sympathize with others.  We're all very different and unique, but we're created with the wonderful ability to understand other humans' emotions.

  1. Liesel, I agree that we are all different and unique, but I don't think a lot of us have the ability to understand what happened to the families of 9/11 victims. I think it's the fact that we DON'T understand these emotions that make us so sympathetic. I have never had anyone extremely close to me die, and I can't even comprehend how difficult that must be and how those that have lost must feel. It's for that reason that I feel so bad for the 9/11 victims' families.
