Attractive Anchor

In order to see how a sexy anchor affects a man's ability to remember the actual news, an experiment was conducted in which hundreds of men were asked to watch the same 24-year-old anchor deliver a broadcast twice.  The first time the anchor was dressed modestly and the second time she wore a more revealing outfit, along with jewelry, makeup and cleavage.

The results of the study showed that while men pay more attention when the anchor is attractive, they retain much less of the information.  This means that while ratings will be higher with a good-looking woman speaking, many fewer facts will be remembered.  The experiment also found that men are less likely to take a sexy anchor seriously.

Women, however, are more likely to retain the information presented by an attractive anchor, probably because she is considered competition.

Beauty is so highly valued in our society, but that means that less qualified people might be hired.  Is this a bad thing?  How can it be fixed?

  1. I definitely think that such a huge emphasis on beauty can be damaging to society, especially in the context of job hiring. However, I would be interested to know how often people are actually given jobs based on their appearance. I cannot believe that a person who is less qualified would be hired just because they are more beautiful! If this is the case though, certain values of certain people (or society) have become very skewed.

  2. Liesel, I have noticed this more and more ever since the discussion we had in class. Check this link out:

I think this video reveals a lot about our culture

    (and in many ways)

  3. Thank you for posting that video. I definitely agree that it reveals a lot about our culture. One of the statements is that beauty is often defined by our weight, but the video also states that teenagers are expected to eat chips and drink soda, which isn't always true. Why do you think all teens are thought of as people who eat junk food frequently?
